Lagophthalmos: Nurturing Eye Health and Comfort

Lagophthalmos is a condition where the eyelids are unable to close completely, leaving part of the eye exposed and unprotected. This can lead to symptoms such as dryness, irritation, tearing, and in severe cases, damage to the corneal surface. Commonly caused by nerve damage, trauma, or certain medical conditions, Lagophthalmos can affect one or both eyes.
Patients with Lagophthalmos may experience a gritty sensation in the eye, increased sensitivity to light, or blurred vision. Because the eyes cannot fully close, there is an increased risk of corneal drying and exposure, which can lead to more serious complications if left untreated.

Treatment

Treatment strategies are focused on protecting the eye and maintaining adequate lubrication. This can include the use of artificial tears, ointments, or specialized tapes to keep the eyes moist and protected, especially during sleep. In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct the eyelid’s position to ensure proper closure and protect the eye from further damage.

At our clinic, we provide comprehensive care for patients with Lagophthalmos. Our approach is tailored to each individual’s needs, ensuring that the eyes are protected and the underlying causes are addressed to improve overall eye health and comfort. If you have concerns about your eyelid function or eye comfort, we welcome you to contact us for a thorough evaluation.

What to Expect During Your Consultation:

Consultations will take place in the office for local patients, or over a virtual video call for out of town patients. During your 30 minute consultation, Dr. Satterfield will review your concerns, perform a thorough exam, and discuss what treatment options are most appropriate, both surgical and non-surgical, that can help you reach your individual goals. Risks, benefits and alternatives to each potential procedure(s) being considered will be discussed and customized to each patient, their anatomy and medical history. Ample time will be allowed for discussion and questions with Dr. Satterfield.

Our goal is for you to leave the consultation feeling empowered with your options, while having a solid understanding of the considerations for each treatment (for example, more dramatic results usually call for a more extensive recovery).

After the consultation, should you have further questions, our office is happy to answer further questions over email, by phone or video call, or even with a in-person follow up consultation with Dr. Satterfield.
