Brow Rejuvenation: Elevate Your Confidence

As time passes, a combination of factors like gravity, sun exposure, stress, muscle activity, and genetics can cause the forehead and brow area to droop due to the effects of aging. This process can result in a resting sad or tired appearance, as a low outer eyebrow with a higher central brow, conveys a look of concern or fatigue. The most common condition, called lateral hooding, is where descent of the tail of the eyebrow causes excess skin bunching or overhang on the eyelid eyelashes, leading to the natural instinct of raising your eyebrows, which can create deep wrinkles in the forehead and between the eyes. This skin overhang may or may not block vision, but often causes a deepening of the crows feet lines.

What type of Brow Surgery is right for me?

Dr. Satterfield is highly trained in all brow lifting and contouring techniques, and will guide you to find the best option for your particular anatomy, with an emphasis on a natural, never ‘over-done’, result.

Internal Browpexy:

This procedure is a good option for patients undergoing upper eyelid blepharoplasty who demonstrate early changes in brow descent or hooding. The tail of the eyebrow is lifted via the internal eyelid crease incision and brow fat pad re-suspended, helping restore the natural youthful position of the lateral brow and taking weight off the corner of the eye.

Endoscopic-Style Brow Re-Contouring (Lifting):

Using incisions hidden in the hairline of the temples, the brows can be repositioned back to a more youthful location, opening and brightening the eyes. This procedure is best in patients with more moderate-severe brow descent, and can address both central and lateral brow drooping. Its advantage is that this technique minimizes size of the incisions and offers a quicker recovery compared to the ‘Classic’ Pretrichial hairline browlift (see below).

Direct Browplasty:

Depending on your skin elasticity and skin-type, making an external incision at the superior border of the brow and taking an ellipse of brow/forehead tissue, gives reliable brow recontouring results, with a well hidden scar. That being said, its important to consider that this procedure results in a scar that is more noticeable for approximately the first 3 months of recovery due to natural healing progression of scars (raised, pink and firm as collagen and blood vessels develop, then they soften and fade with time and blend nicely into the eyebrows). Dr. Satterfield will discuss if this procedure is right for you.

The Classic “Brow Lift” (Pretrichial):

If you have heavy, low set central brows and a tall forehead, then this surgery may be right for you. With an incision placed in the font of the hairline, the brows can be lifted and the forehead shortened, to rebalance facial proportions. This subtle but powerful type of browlift is great for more advanced situations or for patients with marked skin laxity. The goal with this surgery is to restore a natural brow position

Non-Surgical Options (“Botox Brow Lift”):

Depending on your brow position and anatomy, neurotoxins (such as Botox) may be able to be used to lift the central and lateral brows, alleviating mild brow ptosis (or drooping). Neurotoxins may be given around the time of surgery to provide an added boost to lifting in the early healing period following surgery.

Anesthesia and Procedure Duration:

Depending on the type of brow procedure, the surgery may be performed in the clinic or operating room. A brow lift is performed under IV conscious sedation or general anesthesia, and is an outpatient procedure. The surgery generally takes between 1-2 hours.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery:

Following your brow lift, you’ll receive comprehensive post-operative instructions. You will experience mild-moderate swelling for about 1-2 weeks following surgery. A compression dressing and cold compresses can help minimize and manage swelling. While most other facial procedures have minimal pain, more extensive brow surgeries may call for post-operative pain medication such as narcotics and non-narcotic alternatives to ensure your comfort. Is a Brow Lift Right for You?:

Consider a brow lift if you can relate to any of the following:

  • You were born with a very low set brow.
  • You have a low, drooping brow and excess upper eyelid skin.
  • You want to combat signs of aging in the forehead region.
  • Wrinkles in your forehead result from frequently raising or furrowing your brows.

If any of these resonate with you, you may be an ideal candidate for a brow lift.
